The Gambling Commission Fines Swedish Online Casino £600,000 for failing addicts

LeoVegas have been found guilty of not returning the funds of over 11,000 players that chose to Self-exclude themselves from the online casino, customers who feel that they have a problem can blacklist themselves so that they are not able to place bets and to not receive promotional emails.


This comes hot on the tails of popular online gambling firm 888 being fined a record amount of £7.8 million for similar failings in August of 2017. Due to a technical fault over 7000 customers who had chosen to “Self-Exclude” were still able to access their account and place bets, one addict was able to place over 1.3 million pounds worth of bets including £55k stolen from their employer.


The Commission found in their investigation that LeoVegas:

  • Sent advertisements to 1,894 customers who had self-excluded.
  • Failed to refund 11,025 customers when they had closed their accounts and self-excluded.
  • Let 413 self-excluded customers to gamble without speaking to them first and applying a 24 cooling off period.


Despite being fined by the GC, LeoVegas continue to show positive numbers and reports year on year growth. Revenue increased up to €77.4m which is an increase of 76% and earnings per share increased from €0.05 to €0.07, Co-Founder of LeoVegas Gustaf Hagman has shown great enthusiasm of how his company has grown in the year so far.
